hair care

This morning I stopped in at my mother in laws for a cup of coffee before I headed to the grocery store and the first thing out of her mouth after she said hello was to ask me if I was out of hair care products. I said that I wasn’t and asked why she asked, and she proceeded to tell me that she thought I looked tired and also that I seemed a little ruffled around the edges. That my hair didn’t look it’s best like it usually does, which made her think that quite possibly I was out of hair care products.

I have to love my mother in law. She is of Dutch descent and they are known for their bluntness. It has taken me years to get used to the way she says things, and even now sometimes when she says things, such as this about my hair care, I have to remind myself that it’s a culture thing.  I didn’t mention it to her, but I had actually ordered some new hair care products and was expecting them to arrive any day.

The last couple of months I’ve noticed that my hair isn’t as manageable as usual, so when I went to my stylist, she asked if I had changed my hair care products. I told her that I haven’t changed them in years, but it seemed like my hair had gone a little crazy for lack of a better word. I really expected her to laugh and maybe even think I’d lost my mind, but she said that she understood and had struggled with the same hair care problems in the past. She made the suggestion that I try a specific line of hair care products that helped her, so I decided to do just that.

Before I left for the supermarket, I ran to the restroom at my mother in laws home and when I looked in the mirror, I realized why she commented about me being out of hair care products; my hair looked worse than it did when I left the house.  All that cultural bluntness turns out to be a good thing. It also didn’t help that it had been pouring rain when I got out of the car to go into my mother in laws house, but in combination with the hair care products that don’t seem to be doing their thing, I was a mess. I hope those new hair care products come today. It won’t be a minute too soon.
